The Swiss Army Bike

Een Introductie:

Dit is de startpagina van een aantal bijzondere fietsen uit Zwitserland. Ook wel bekend als de Zwitserse legerfiets of in mooi Engels: The Swiss Army Bike. We onderscheiden drie verschillende types. Daarop zijn natuurlijk varianten gemaakt in de loop van de tijd. De drie belangrijkste modellen zijn: De MO-05, de Armee en de MO-93. Voor elk model is een pagina. 

De MO-05 is in principe ontwikkeld in 1905 en vrijwel ongewijzigd gemaakt tot ongeveer 1988. Aanvankelijk alleen door Condor maar later door nog zeven andere fabrieken. Waarom dat is moet gezocht worden in de structuur van de Zwitserse maatschappij. Zwitserland is opgedeeld in een aantal regio's en een aantal gebieden met een eigen cultuur en industrie.

Het model ARMEE  is ontstaan vlak voor WWII. Op zijn vroegst in 1939. Ook Zwitserland zag een komende oorlogsdreiging. De gewone fietsproductie was al op gang gekomen en meer konden de acht fabrieken niet leveren. Het leger wilde er snel meer. Zo werd elk bedrijf dat in staat was fietsen te produceren aan het werk gezet. Hierdoor ontstond een mix aan onderdelen in elke fiets maar in grote lijnen waren ze allemaal hetzelfde. Waarschijnlijk is de productie de hele oorlog doorgegaan. Ze werden niet gebruikt door de fietsbataljons maar gewoon op de kazerne en er omheen. De Armee is ook niet in 1944 van trommelremmen voorzien.

De MO-93 is een ontwikkeling van Condor omdat bleek dat de 05 een beetje gedateerd begon te worden. De fiets is ontwikkeld in het begin van de negentiger jaren en tot 2004 gebruikt in de speciale eenheden van het Zwitserse leger. Aanvankelijk hadden drie fabrikanten een proefmodel gemaakt. Het beste uit de drie ontwerpen werd gebruikt en Condor kreeg de opdracht. Zie voor meer informatie over deze modellen de buttons in de linker kolom.

This is a 3-speed cycle called "Welcome" which was made by condor in the 1940s. It resembles the English types but it is much better in mechanical matters. It is much easyer to maintain. I have found it in the old iron and taken it home. First I thought about taking it apart for spare parts but when I saw how good its mechanical condition was and how clever it was made I decided to do a complete service. I took all to pieces and rebuilt it. It still looks the same as before but the mechanic is like new. Everything exept for the pedals and the tyres is the original stuff! It is dark green and has white decoration stripes. Hans-Peter

 
This picture of a "Fahrrad Postvelo" shows also a Condor machine. It was built in 1959 and belonged to one of my friends grandfather who was a postman in Bern. Usually every postman had his personal bicycle. In the background you see Lenzburg, the town where I live. Hans-Peter

 
Condor made many bicyles for the the state and gouvernement. For exemple they developed cycles for the postal services, for the railway and for the army. But they also produced for the civil market. They made on one hand bicycles which looked very much like the army-cycle. On the other hand they alse produced 3-speed cycles equipped with Sturmey-Archer gear. Some of them looked like the English ones but were more practical to maintain and others looked like all the normal Swiss cycles looked. These were the typical 3-speed cycles which were produced by many firms in a large number during the 1950s, 60s and 70s and which you still find today very often. I have added a picture of such a typical ladies 3-speed cycle. This one was made in 1973. Hans-Peter
